Dr. Alan O. Blanton opened his practice in Collierville in 1983 after graduating from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center - College of Dentistry. For the last 37 years he has maintained his general family practice in the same community where he raised his own three children. For the last 14 years he has also treated patients diagnosed with sleep disordered breathing, especially in the forms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Primary Disruptive Snoring and Sleep-related Bruxism, with Oral Appliance Therapy. He is a member of the American Dental Association (ADA), the Tennessee Dental Association (TDA), the Memphis Dental Society, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), and the American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP).
He has served as Course Chair of the AADSM Board Review Course (2015 and 2016), Member of the AADSM Annual Meeting Committee (2015 and 2016), Course Chair for the AADSM Advanced Course (2016), and is currently a Reviewer for both the Journal of Dental Sleep Medicine and CRANIO: The Journal of Craniomandibular & Sleep Practice.
In 2014 he became one of only 325 dentist nationally (and 4 dentists in the state of Tennessee) to earn Board Certification in Dental Sleep Medicine by the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. Board certification earned him the distinction of Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine For three years (2017 - 2019) he was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.
He is an Associate Professor and former Director of the Dental Sleep Medicine and Orofacial Pain/TMD program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center - College of Dentistry. He continues to lecture on Orofacial Pain at the College of Dentistry as well as holding the position of Co-Chair of the AADSM MASTERY PROGRAM outside of Chicago, Illinois. (The MASTERY PROGRAM is a three weekend mini-residency program sponsored by the AADSM and taught 6 times a year at the former McDonald's Training Campus in Oakbrook, Illinois.)
Dr. Blanton lives with his wife, Johnnie, in Germantown, Tennessee. Between them they have 5 grown children (the youngest beginning his senior year at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville) and 8 grandchildren.
He spends his spare time resting.
