Preventive Dentistry: Avoid Dental Problems All Year

Mother daughter and grandmother smilingIf you’re like most people, we bet that you’d prefer to prevent dental issues from developing in the first place rather than have to fix them later. This is why prevention is such a large part of our practice. With the services listed below, Dr. Flex and Dr. Hodge can stop most dental problems before they even start, which will not only keep your teeth looking great, but will also give you a smile that you never have to worry about!

Checkups & Cleanings

These are two of the most important tools in all of dentistry. With just two checkups and cleanings each year, we can make your smile beautiful, healthy, functional, and keep it that way for years to come. These treatments are excellent for patients of all ages, and they are a big part of how we save people from having to get more involved (and expensive!) restorative treatments in the future. To learn more about how they actually work, simply click on the links below.

Dental Sealants

When children are still learning to brush, they often don’t clean their back teeth effectively, which is why they very often get cavities.  Additionally, groovy teeth in adults often trap bacteria and lead to cavities.  Dental sealants are a quick and easy treatment we can use to give you or your child’s teeth an extra layer of protection against tooth decay. With dental sealants, we simply apply a clear, thin layer of material in the grooves of the teeth in order to prevent plaque and bacteria from accumulating on them.  They are safe, easy, and a great preventive treatment option.

Nightguards for Bruxism

Bruxism is a condition that affects about 1 in 3 people in the US today, and it is characterized by unconscious jaw clenching and teeth grinding during sleep. Over time, this can cause the teeth to wear down and eventually break! Fortunately, we can provide a simple and easy to use solution in the form of a nightguard. It’s a small, custom-made mouthguard that a patient would wear to bed each night or during the day, and it works by providing a protective barrier between the teeth.

Woman receiving oral cancer screening

Oral Cancer Screening

Nearly 50,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year, and many will not survive the next 5 because the disease was simply caught too late. To prevent this from happening to you, we will always perform an oral cancer screening during your regular checkup. Using a visual exam and VELScope technology, we will look at your gums, lips, cheeks, tongue, throat, and neck for any signs of the disease. If we find anything that causes concern, we can advise you on what to do next.

Young child receives fluoride treatment

Fluoride Treatment

You’ve probably seen fluoride included in many kinds of toothpastes, and it’s probably been added to your local water source as well. This is because fluoride is nature’s gift to your teeth! It strengthens enamel and helps protect your smile from tooth decay and cavities. This is why we will always recommend a fluoride treatment during your normal checkup. It only takes a couple of minutes to complete, and it’s one of the best things we can do to preserve your smile.
