Diagnosis & Treatment

Your TMJ can start to experience problems for a number of reasons, with the most common being stress, injury, or arthritis. These can all cause the jaw to become stiff and painful. In many cases, it tends to pop and click often, and it can even become stuck while opening or closing. TMJ problems can also lead to strain in the facial muscles that can cause chronic migraines and earaches.

When you come to see us for your routine checkup, we will always check on the health of your TMJ. We’ll test your range of motion, ask you about any pain you might be feeling, and look at how your teeth come together. If you happen to show any symptoms of TMD, don’t worry, we can treat you right here in our office. It may involve doing a few simple stretches throughout the day, or we might suggest that you use a specialized mouthguard called an occlusal splint.

Occlusal Splint

This is a small, easy to use mouthguard that can be used to treat TMJ pain. Each one is custom-made, so it will comfortably fit over your teeth while providing complete relief. It will shift your jaw slightly so that the muscles can relax into a more natural position. TMD is often associated with nighttime teeth grinding as well, and the splint will help provide a protective barrier between them.

If your jaw has been bothering you lately, or if you can’t seem to find the cause of your chronic headaches, please come see us . You could very well be dealing with TMD and not know it. With us, we’ll be able to get to the root of your problem and help you get the proper treatment.
